Manchester United target Yann Sommer sets Opta’s European record

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea kept a much-loved clean sheet in the Premier League on Saturday.

But the Spaniard is set to face increased competition, with Manchester United heavily linked with signing a new goalkeeper ahead of the transfer deadline.

One player linked with his replacement is Borussia Moenchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who has been named as a target by Swiss outlet Blick.

The Sun claimed United sent scouts to monitor him last week. If they saw him in action this weekend, they would have been very impressed.

Sommer sets Opta data record

Sommer played a key role in helping Borussia Moenchengladbach hold Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw.

The goalkeeper made 19 saves, a record in Europe’s top five leagues since data collection began, WhoScored reported.

His outstanding performances also earned him a perfect 10.0 rating, the first in the Bundesliga for seven years.

Unfortunately, that probably meant that “Gladbach’s asking price for the goalkeeper went up.

Sommer certainly won’t want to trade a regular starting spot for a spot on the bench, with a key role in Switzerland’s World Cup squad awaiting him.

United are expected to settle for Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka instead, with Fabrizio Romano suitor the Slovak accepted personal conditions, if the Premier League side agree to let him go.
