With the coronavirus trending all year round, one could be forgiven for thinking that nothing else has happened in 2020 that is not linked to a pandemic. However, as the Annual report of the year in research 2020 shows, a lot of other things were entered into the Google search engine. Users had questions and were interested in people, topics, places, artists, and recipes, among others.
As expected, the “coronavirus” and the US elections were among the top searches. But the report also highlights research on some topical issues – “insomnia”, “how to become a teacher” and “how to become a nurse” – which have reached unprecedented heights.
The year also saw some popular research replaced by others. Meanwhile, some search choices have replaced others; searches for “mask emoji” overtook those for cuddly emoji, while “how to learn coding” was at the top of the list of things people planned to learn.
What Nigerians were curious about
Here is what defined the year in Nigeria in the “Questions” category:
- Who is the new president of the USA?
- When does school resume?
- How to make a hand sanitizer?
- Who is George Floyd?
- How to make a face mask?
- Who is Joe Biden?
- Who is Laycon?
- How to bake a cake?
- Who is Aisha Yesufu?
- How to make bread?
“Who is the new president of the United States? Likely topped the “Questions” category in Nigeria because Donald Trump refused to concede defeat to Joe Biden, who topped the most wanted “People” list in a similar trend.
With many countries closed for most of the year, including Nigeria, educational institutions have been closed.
However, although parents have resorted to home schooling and online classes during the lockdown, expectations are high for schools to reopen.
Google search analysis shows a peak in searches for the resume date in September, when the academic term typically begins. This came in the wake of the Nigerian federal government announcing the first phase of easing the lockdown.
Having “how to make a face mask” and “how to make a hand sanitizer” on the list isn’t strange either, as the prices of these products have skyrocketed, requiring DIY options.
Other search results on this list aptly featured trending people of the year like #BlackLivesMatter (George Floyd), #EndSARS movement (Aisha Yesufu) and #BBNaija Lockdown Edition (Laycon).
Sad moments
Google included a category listing the top ten search results for people who died during the year. On January 26, the world was shocked by the deaths of Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter in a helicopter crash.
In August, seven months later, Chadwick Boseman – the star of Black Panther – lost his battle with colon cancer.
Nigerian reggae legend Majek Fashek also died mid-year at the age of 57 from cancer.
The nation has lost two famous politicians to COVID-19 – former governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi; and former chief of staff to the President of Nigeria, Abba Kyari.
Other mentions include the sudden death of 39-year-old philanthropist Ibidun Ighodalo; American rapper King Von; ex-president of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings; and American actress Naya Rivera.
